PS5 or Xbox Won’t Turn On or Shows No Signal? Check This First

Updated November 6, 2026

A console that stays dark or a TV that says “No Signal” looks scary, but a few minutes of checking often finds the cause, or at least tells you what kind of repair it is.

  1. Step 1Power-cycle itUnplug the power cable from the console and the wall for a couple of minutes, then plug it straight into a wall outlet (no power strip).
  2. Step 2Swap the HDMI cable and TV inputTry a cable you know works, and another HDMI input or another TV.
  3. Step 3Try the console’s safe startPS5: with it off, hold the power button until the second beep to start Safe Mode. Xbox: Microsoft has a display reset; see its support page for your model.
  4. Step 4Check airflowMake sure vents are not blocked and dust is not packed in. Consoles shut off to protect themselves when they overheat.

Signs of a damaged HDMI port

No picture with a known-good cable and TV, a plug that feels loose, or pins inside the port that look bent or pushed in. This usually happens when the cable is pulled or the console is moved while plugged in. Replacing the HDMI port is a common console repair.

Signs it is power

No light, no beep and no fan at all, even from a wall outlet, points to the power supply or the board. A burning smell means unplug it and do not try again; bring it in.

Before you open it

Opening a console can void the manufacturer’s warranty and risks static damage. If yours is still under warranty, check with the maker first.

Questions

Is HDMI port replacement worth it?

Usually, yes. It costs much less than a new console, and the rest of the console is unaffected.

Will I lose my games and saves?

An HDMI port or power repair does not erase the storage. Cloud saves are a good backup either way.
